Art and Performance

Art is at the heart of Nowhere, but what is art?

At Nowhere, art is what you make it - free of stifling boundaries and classifications. For the days we're there the site flowers with creativity as participants transform the landscape with their projects. Art is not all about visibility either, and at Nowhere interactivity is a common feature of much of the art.

Projects at Nowhere are hard to categorise, encompassing many points in the universe of artistic expression: from the beauty of the purely visual to the confrontation of cacophonous performances; from the enrichment of shared creations to the poignant expressions of a single artist. The imagination is allowed to roam freely, and the inventiveness of the human mind manifests itself unencumbered by narrow definitions.

You don't just go to Nowhere and look, however. You are the creators, the participants. It is not a place for spectators, it is a place for sharing the depth of your imagination. Come and build your work, perform, interact. Inspire and be inspired.

Of course making these plans into reality means you have to be rooted in reality; considerations of self-reliance apply equally to the practicalities of creativity. You may need to build much of your project in advance, wherever you can find a suitable space. If you don't live there, mounting a project in Spain may present challenges - including the need to research availability of materials and work out transport to the site.

Communication before the event will be of mutual benefit to you and the other participants of Nowhere. Using the Current Projects wiki and the mailing list you can find volunteers to help, find collaborators to bounce ideas off and start to build anticipation. In documenting your project online you help to inspire others to come to Nowhere and add their own artistic touch. Large art pieces need their own space on the site, too, so we ask you to co-ordinate your efforts with the site layout team.

Projects with elements of performance often have timing considerations too, and some artists at Nowhere exchange skills by offering workshops to engage participants in their projects. You'll find more about this on the performance and workshops page.

Nowhere is a commerce-free event, but we realise that the projects you want to create remain bound to the real-world need of money to pay for the materials and transport. A significant proportion of the ticket proceeds is allocated to grants for art. Details of this are on the Art Grants page.

As you are attending a Leave No Trace event, you will need to plan for the complete removal of your project at the end of the event.
